The huia
The huia bird was the largest living wattlebird in New Zealand it is part of the callaeidae
family this family includes lots of relatives like the saddleback bird and the kōkako.
The huia went extinct in the 20th century. Conservation efforts tried to save about 100 years
ago but they were not properly infroced.
Threats
Huia was once found all across the north island. Before the time of the European settlement
the māori hunted them for their feathers even then It was hard to find them.
The māori prized their huia so it was a great privilege to wear the huia feather so only the
chiefs wore them.
Description
The huia was a bird the size of a magpie. They had black feathers and the tip of their tail was
white. Both males and females were similar in size but you could tell them apart by their beak
the females had a long thin beak and the males had a short stubby beak.

Did you know that the huia`s call was audible from 300-400 meters away.
