The huia

   The huia

The huia bird was the largest living wattlebird in New Zealand it is part of  the callaeidae

family this family includes lots of relatives like the saddleback bird  and the kōkako.

The huia went extinct in the 20th century. Conservation efforts tried to save about 100 years

ago but they were not properly infroced.

Threats

Huia was once found all across the north island. Before the time of the European settlement

the māori hunted them for their feathers even then It was hard to find them.

The  māori prized their huia so it was a great privilege to wear the huia feather so only the

chiefs wore them.

Description

The huia was a bird the size of a magpie. They had black feathers and the tip of their tail was

white. Both males and females were similar in size but you could tell them apart by their beak

the females had a long thin beak and the males had a short stubby beak.

Fun fact

Did you know that the huia`s call was audible from 300-400 meters away.
